Varanam Ayiram Movie Review

Hi and vanakam to all. After this movie delayed for Deepavalli release, it finally hit the silver screen.

I don’t like to read movie reviews before watching them. However, I couldn’t help this time and I read this review at last. I know the intro given for this movie absolutely high, what we need to know when this have Gautham Menon, Surya, Simran and Harris Jeyaraj.

The Plot

The film begins with an elderly person (Surya) dying. This news is informed to his son Surya (Surya). He then thinks about his father and his life’s journey. Krishnan (Surya) is a college student. So is Malini (Simran Bagga). They fall in love with each other and get married. They soon have a son ,Surya. He grows up more as a friend to his father. He then joins a college near Tiruchi. There he takes part in various cultural activities and develop his guitarist skills. When he is on a train back home after completion of college, he meets Meghna (Sameera Reddy). He soon proposes to her which she rejects saying that they had only known each other for a very short period and its not possible to fall in love like that. Surya then tells her that wherever she goes, he will meet her. Later, he finds Meghna’s house and meets her there. There she tells that she is going to University of California, Berkeley to pursue higher education. After that Krishnan, Surya’s father, falls sick and is admitted to the hospital. Then on, an inspired Surya obtains various projects and finally builds a house. After that, he goes to the U.S and meets Meghna there. After some days Meghna proposes to him and they stay happily for a few days. Then she goes to Oklahoma on a tour but dies there in a bomb blast. A disheartened Surya then decides to come back to India. He meets a person in the airport who tries to console him with his words. In India, he meets Priya (Divya Spandana), his sister’s friend. But being unable to forget Meghna, he starts taking drugs. He is then sent to Kashmir to rejuvenate himself. There he learns that Aditya, the son of the person who inspired him in the airport was kidnapped. He soon goes and visits them at Delhi. Upon seeing the lethargic attitude of the police, he takes matters into his own hands and goes in search of the kidnappers. After days of roaming streets and gathering information, he finally locates the kidnapper and the place where Aditya is kept and rescues him from the kidnappers. Back home, Surya starts to go out with his sister and Priya. One day Priya proposes to him but he doesn’t respond. Then he joins the army. After 6 years, Priya comes there to meet him and proposes again; this time he accepts and they marry and have children. Suddenly Krishnan is diagnosed of throat cancer and is operated. After some days Surya is called upon to go on a rescue mission to rescue a journalist. But when he is out there, Krishnan dies. The movie ends with Surya, his sister, Malini and Priya mixing his ashes in the sea and waking away.

See what Maathiyoose says:

On the downside, the film is excruciatingly slow, and in the second half plods as the director has no story to say. All of a sudden why did he make his hero larger than life? The Delhi kidnapping and the hero solving it has been done to bring out his heroism, which sticks out like a sore thumb. Is there not a cut-off age to join the army? Surya’s character is far too simplistic. The thing about a father backing his son to go to America and win over his lady love just doesn’t wash. An ordinary middle class, Tamil family speaking so fluently in English does not gel with viewers.

The film demands great patience to sit through and is an overdose of emotions. If the film holds on, it is because of its music and superb performance of Surya. On the whole, the film is optimistic, fresh and emotionally honest. But how mature are our audiences, is the million dollar question?

What do you think? Is it boring? Do you enjoy this Surya’s movie? Could it beat Ghajini and Sillinu Oru Kaadhal?

  5. Another movie high lighting the relationship between a father and son - it is hard not to think about Cheran’s Thavamai Thavamirundhu (TT) when you watch this movie. The difference in this movie is that it is taken with metropolitian city - more sophisticated backdrop versus Cheran’s movie had more village - small town backdrop. I thought TT was very slow moving, but after watching this movie, TT is like a fast moving Bond movie. Harris Jeyraj’s songs are good, but some numbers are definetly repeating. Surya is a big plus with his youthful - slimdown look. You can tell what a marriage can do to a lady after watching Simran on this movie. Sameera Reddy gives the sophisticated look for a Berkeley research student. I am not sure why Gautam Menon picked Divya Spandana to pair against youthful Surya - this pair looked pathetic.
To sum up, I wasted my $$ on this.

P.S: drug usage and intimate scenes between Surya and Divya will put this movie in R rated category - I made the mistake of taking my 6 year old.

  15. After such a long period tamil movie industry, Varanam Aayiram is come out as breakstone for new movie era. Very nice and matured movie. Sharpful dialogues and in time comedies. Just dont compare this movie other foolish masala movies like Kuruvi etc all. Hats off for Surya, Gautham, Harris & all the crews.

  16. One real good after a long time, it was definitely worth the money spent .. i definitely chose my movies and only after hearing enough +ve reviews from friends did decide on the movie, took the entire family and all across diff ages from a 6yr, 13yr, 17yr right upto my mom at 55yrs enjoyed the movie .. so you can be rest assured it is a good family entertainer … at certain shots there are more violence which may not be appropriate for the younger generation but definitely worth on the whole …

Surya - an Outstanding performance - a one man show, Sameera - a stupendous and an excellent Job(quite matured for the role given - definitely a new look - keep going - cheers!!!), simran/Divya - Sloppy …

Gautham Menon - thanks once again for another fabulous entertainer, Harris Jayaraj - Brilliant is not the word … fabulously good … a real rejuvenated Music … redefinition of the Guitar - best that i have heard after Jodha Akhbar …. All the songs in the movie are extremely good .. best in lyrics too - (hats off to the Lyricist)

If such movies are aired more we cannot expect the beginning of the next Golden Era ..
